雖然光纖具有不導電性的，可以免受衝擊電流，而且光纖中的金屬構件對地絕緣值較高，雷電流不易進入光纖。但由於光纖具有加強芯，特別是直埋光纖具有鎧裝層，因此光纖遭雷擊時，同樣會發生光纜被燒毀或損壞的情況。
如何對光纖做好防雷主要措施?
1)對於直理式光纜線路的防雷，可採取局內接地方式或依照YDJ14-91的規定，在光纖接頭處防潮層、鎧裝層和加強芯作電氣斷開處理，且都不接地，對地呈絕緣狀態。
2)對於架空光纖，架空吊線應電氣連接並每隔2km進行一次接地，接地時可直接或通過合適的浪涌保護裝置接地。
3)光纜進入終端盒後，終端盒應接地，在雷電流進入光纜金屬層內後，終端盒接地可迅速放掉雷電流，起到保護作用。
